True Colors

So tonight, I went out to see the True Colors tour. The show was fantastic, even if our seats weren't.

We decided to go with the “cheap” seats (if you call $70 cheap) and ended up in BFE, at the very top of the theater. Ah well, we could still see the show, although, at least to me, the sound was bad, though that might have had a lot to do with my hearing aids. Incidentally, I'm bummed that these digital hearing aids I have that were supposedly advertised to handle concerts perform so horribly…I get better sound just taking the damn things out they distort so badly, but then I can't hear the vocals :-( . I got better audio quality from concerts out of the old analog ones…I guess I should dig those up and see if they still work for shows like these.

Anyway, highlights of the show:

  • Margaret Cho was hilarious, and her timing's better than it was in the previous performances…I hate it when she wrings the humor out of a joke to the last drop.
  • Dresden Dolls were FANTASTIC. I'm SOOO seeing them in concert again. What a trip those two are. They're like a cabaret version of the White Stripes. Fuckin awesome.
  • The Clicks performing a ROCK version of “Cry Me A River” that sounded terrific.
  • DebORAH Harry sounded terrible, boring, and played a total of NONE of her popular songs. And didn't even show up for the finale. What a bitch…I won't waste my money on HER any time soon.
  • Rosie…what a potty mouth, and she's STILL pissed at Donald Trump LOL!. She's still funny as shit and goes to prove that you should never piss of a comedian. They will always win the war of words.
  • Erasure were FABULOUS! Andy gave a terrific performance singing lots of classics: Oh L'amour, Chains Of Love, Love to Hate You, Blue Savannah Song, A Little Respect, and several others that I can't think of off the top of my head. That completes my checklist of seeing the Holy 80's ElectroPop Trinity in concert: Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, and now Erasure. :-) Now if I can only get to a show of The Cure and Nine Inch Nails, I'll have seen all my long time favorite bands.
  • Cyndi Lauper was AMAZING!!!!! Damn, that chick puts on a hell of a performance. She was pitch perfect (as always), and very much the rocker chick. She also really loves her fans. She kept going out in the audience, hugging people and singing in the aisles. And of course, all the gay men were nothing but friendly, warm, and helpful…even boosted her back up on stage a couple times. :-) Cyndi sang LOTS of classics, INCLUDING THE GOONIES SONG!! She also sang She Bop, Girls Just Want to have Fun, I Drove All Night (one of my favorite of hers…i hate Celine for butchering that incredible song), and a Prince song (forget the name…Ruff?) I'm a little bummed she didn't do my all-time favorite of hers, but it's fairly obscure, so I understand (Little Boy Blue).
  • Who knew Rosie knew how to handle a drum kit so well? Lord knows what she does with those drumsticks when she's not using them on a musical instrument (ewwwww!)
  • Finale: Everyone (except for Debbie Harry) got up on stage and sang “Take a Chance On Me”…EVERYONE singing together…Andy Bell with Cyndi Lauper…it was fuckin awesome.
  • Finale x2: Final song of the night “True Colors” which has always been a very special song to me. When i first heard that song as a kid, I could always relate to it for some reason, which I'd yet to learn till college. That song all but told me that I was gay and that I shouldn't feel ashamed for it. It's a track that always brings me to tears, and having this whole theater filled with gay folks (and honorary gay folks up on stage) was just very emotional. We all hugged and sang along with the song with our arms around each other. It's one of those special emotional moments that had me tearing up. :-)
