Fables Comic Review

Writer: Bill Willingham
Artists: Various
Published by: Vertigo (DC Comics)

Quite simply put…this is the best comic out in the market right now.  If you’re not reading this, regardless if you’re a comics fan or not, then you’re really missing out on something quite amazing.  This comic is easily on par with the likes of Sandman and is the next big title in the Vertigo line of comics.

The storylines are pretty simple and clear.  The Fables have fled to the Mundy world (our world) as a result of an evil Adversary taking over all the fable lands.  The adversary, which is revealed later in the book as a very surprising puppet master, is quite brutal, and wants the Fables back to the homeland.

What follows is drama, action, intrigue, and humor.  We see Snow White falling in love with Bigby (formerly “The Wolf” in Little Red Riding Hood who can actually transform himself).  We see Prince Charming, a shallow, crass womanizer, take over mayorship of Fabletown (a couple blocks that exist in New York City) from Old King Cole.  Cinderella is revealed as an assassin and spy working for the good guys.

This is NO kid’s book.  There are murders, ruthless takeovers, spying, subterfuge, and politics.  Currently at issue 52, the series is set to end around issue 75.  Having said that, I HIGHLY advise you pick up the trade paperbacks (Volume 1 is only $9.99 on amazon).

I forgot to mention the art. The book is drawn by multiple artists, but every single time, they manage to nail the look and feel of this title.  Somewhat dreamy, cartoony, but with a strong edge, the artists manage to balance between fairy tale imagery and more stark, modern comic visual storytelling.

As you can probably tell, I LOVE this book.  And regardless if you’re a fan of comics or not, you’d be doing yourself a favor by reading these.
