Noble Causes Comic Review

Creator and Writer: Jay Faerber
Artist: Various
Publisher: Image Comics

So, I’d been reading about this comic called Noble Causes written by Jay Faerber.  I was introduced to his stuff when he started writing the “new” New Mutants series, which was renamed to New X-Men.  I was very skeptical when I started reading New Mutants, as he was a relative unknown, but was very impressed with his work.  He really knows how to get you feeling for the characters quickly.  That’s no easy feat for an ensemble cast of characters in a comic.

I read this series recently, and I have to say…this is one of the few times I started reading and couldn’t stop.  This series is a super-hero soap opera, with a famous hero family, the Nobles, tangling with their arch-nemeses, The Blackthorne family.

This book is just great.  I enjoyed the character interactions, of which there are many, as well as the action sequences.  Jay takes classic comic plotlines (teleporting to the future, etc…) and puts a spin on them so they’re not such stale plot devices.  Additionally, the Noble family isn’t nearly as honorable as you would think a “super” family would be.  Really, they use their powers to amass more celebrity, and in turn, financial gain.

Not such a great group, as you can see.

Anyway, if you’re a fan of ensemble comic series with a lot of character development, this would be it.  There is a substantial amount of action, but that takes a backseat to the character relations.

And oh yeah, there’s a lesbian super couple in the book. ;-)

Anyone else read this comic yet?  I suggest trying for the graphic novels.  Or maybe getting them in digital format. ;-)
