Just got back from The Hole and trying to wind down, so I thought I’d put together my top 10 albums for 2008. Without further adieu…
Honorable Mentions:
REM – Accelerate
Cold War Kids – Loyalty to Loyalty
Coldplay – Viva La Vida (huff…yes, it’s good…but this band is becoming so…pretentious)
Erykah Badu – New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)
Cyndi Lauper – Bring ya to the Brink
M83 – Saturday Youth
So occasionally I’ve posted articles here sharing what I’ve been listening to. This is what’s been playing on my ipod lately:

The Black Kids – Partie Traumatic
Kind of a mix of rock, disco, and pop. Very fun, and I absolutely L O V E ”I”m not gonna teach your boyfriend how to dance with you”

Brazilian Girls – New York City
Electronica with a lead singer who’s fluent in five languages and incorporates them into her songs to great effect. It’s dancey, fun, and very Euro-cool.
I haven’t done one of these in a while, but just wanted to share what I’ve been listening to lately.
As you may recall, I didn’t enjoy the new Madonna album as much as I’d hoped. A couple tracks on the album were all right, but overall I think it was a bit of a mess. And apparently the buying public thought so too, since it only sold about 500k albums. That’s pretty disappointing for someone LiveNation paid $120 mil.

Anyway, I’ve really enjoyed the new Death Cab for Cutie album, Narrow Stairs. They always seemed to me kind of a mix of REM and Pet Shop Boys, and I’ve really loved their music. Unfortunately, they don’t sound quite as great live, but the album is pretty terrific. There’s a little bit of electro, a little psychedelia, and lots of great indie rock going on.

Estelle’s Shine album is pretty awesome too, if you like R&B with a euro twist. I particularly love her remix of George Michael’s “Faith” in the song “No Substitute Love”. I think it was unnecessary to have all the US-centric hip hop stars, Kanye West, Will.i.am, etc…as she can really stand on her own.

Also listening to Nine Inch Nails – The Slip. It was fucking awesome of Trent to give us all a free album, especially one of such high quality. It reminds me a lot of earlier NiN albums like Pretty Hate Machine and, of course, my favorite, The Downward Spiral.

The new Hot Chip – Made in the Dark record sounds very promising. Of course, I really enjoy electropop of all flavors, and this one is definitely worth a listen.

I’m still thoroughly enjoying Vampire Weekend’s self-titled album. They may be an Ivy-League band, but they sound terrific. Kind of an early-Police sound, with loads of reggae-tinged hooks.
How much do I hate thee right now? Let me count the ways…
1) American Life
and…
THIS DRECK:

Madonna, you are NOT hip hop. Would you quit trying? Go back to making dance records with Paul Oakenfold or Sasha and Digweed. That’s your true talent. This…crap…well…I’m going to try to forget I ever listened to it. I’m going to try to forget you ever made this heaping pile of dung, and go back to listening to my Feist album. This…record…and is most definitely a THUMBS DOWN for me. You so disappoint me.
And oh yah, you’re a little old to be wearing that get up (points to the picture above). Leave that to the Britney tramps of the world. You just look like a loose sack of old bones cinched too tightly in a black leather corset. Don’t do that again. What would Lourdes think???
I went shopping for some games yesterday at a nearby Gamestop, when I noticed the following being advertised:

I think Pü might have to make a comeback reunion show! But then I fear of brains simultaneously exploding at the sheer kickass-ness we will dish out at our shows. I don’t think you can handle the Pü…
In other news, I also picked up the new Gran Turismo for PS3, Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core (PSP), Final Fantasy Tactics (PSP) and Patapon (PSP). I haven’t had a chance to play anything yet as my PSP battery is dead and I can’t find the adapter. Durnit. I’ll let y’all know what I think when I find it.
As some of you may know, I have eclectic tastes in music. One of my old favorites is Bjork…she’s always pushed the boundaries of music and performance in her videos. The new one, Wanderlust, is…well…I just can’t even remotely explain it, but it’s absolutely breathtaking. There are two versions, 2D and 3D. The 2D version can be seen here, or here for a much better quality. The 3D version will be coming out on April 14th.
Check the video out and let me know what you think!
