The Verve has reunited!!! I was listening to one of the best albums of the 1990s, Urban Hymns, and thought I'd take a look at the wiki entry. Apparently, the reunited just a couple months ago and have a new album/tour coming out soon. God I hope it's good, and damn straight I'll be getting some tickets!
Wherein our heroine sings a song making fun of all the Lindsay Lohans and Paris Hiltons of the world:
A song devoted to Lindsey Lohan from Tori Amos, hahaha

“Just a little chat
I need to have
When I was 21 do you think I had a bag of cocaine in my car?
If I did – if I did
You’d never know it because it would have been hidden I’m not stupid.
But why are so many 21-year old millionaires so stupid?
Stupid and cute.
But stupid – I don’t know.
Let’s just say
When I was 26 (or seven – or eight)
And I was a billionairess
What would I have done?
Many naughty things.
Many, many, many naughty things.
But I would have had a DRIVER!
‘Cuz I’m not stupid, no.
I’m not stupid, no.
Not THAT stupid anyway
‘Cuz if I had been naughty
(I like being naughty)
But I haven’t been caught so far
and I am almost 44
44
And I’ve done many, many, many, many, many bad things.
They are hidden inside my *mmm – mmm*
Inside my *mmm – mmm*
So there’s no record or no fingerprints on it
‘Cuz I’m not stupid
‘Cuz I’m not stupid
No, not stupid!”
My first job out of college was working for a company called Cybermedia. They're no longer around anymore, but back in the day they were a premiere developer of utilities for windows-based machines.
I was hired to help QA our First Aid '98 software. Needless to say, it wasn't a particularly fun job, and I could only manage sticking around for 10 months tops. I took a 50% paycut so that I could move to Los Angeles and work in the tech industry, and this was the only way I could think of to get there.
This was prior to the internet explosion, really. What I REALLY wanted to do is web production at the time, but there weren't too many shops in Southern California that could hire and sustain a salary for full-time employees. That all seemed to happen overnight, though, and I was later offered the opportunity to work in web development.
However, for my first 10 months I was QA, for a failing software that ended up destroying Cybermedia and ending that company entirely. The software did more damage to peoples' machines than helped, and ultimately McAfee bought the company for a steal (it was already a publicly traded company at that point) for its virus scan software and closed the offices down.
For me, I left quite a bit before those turn of events. But it didn't help that we were located right next door to Activision's offices, which is where I REALLY wanted to go. But the only way to “get in” would be to get into their QA department, and God, did I learn how much I hated QA work.
Anyway, I remember this time being the most stressful due to heavy financial difficulties as well as the most exciting due to my first REAL job out of college. I'd moved to LA to be with some friends of mine at the time (who at the time I thought would be my support group…and who completely blew me off the minute I moved to the city). I didn't want to live in a small town, which was what would be required of me had I taken a career in my degree (Environmental Engineering) from Cal Poly, SLO.
The reason this all came up was that I'd run into Sarah McLachlan's album, Surfacing, which had come out at that same time. I listened to that album religiously and it reminds me so much of my first steps out in the big bad world…a small town boy moved to the big city of Los Angeles. I listened to it every on the drive from West Hollywood to Santa Monica. I was broke ass poor, and I didn't know where I was going to get money for my next meal (seriously…) but I can still remember fondly listening to this record every day.

It was one hell of a whirlwind experience, but there were many great experiences in addition to the painful ones. Ultimately, the decision to move out was a result of my growing isolation and loneliness and desire to make a new start. But it's just amazing how I can listen to certain albums from the past and be instantly transported to that period.
It doesn't happen as much anymore, and I think that has a lot to do with my youth and desire to find art that I could identify with. As I've gotten older I suppose I've satiated that need…I listen to music less for its depth and complexity and more for the enjoyment. But, yah…I STILL have very strong emotional connections to those albums I grew up with, and Surfacing was absolutely one of them.
Oh my God, this album is amazing. If you like singer-songwriter folk-rock music, this is definitely the one to listen to:

I’ve been downloading a lot of mashup and internet DJ mixes for a bit now, and have found them to be of variable quality, from absolutely terrific to atrocious. This is one of the better ones. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
One of the most important bands, to me, in the late 90s, early 00s was Radiohead. I loved their sonic textures and soundscapes coupled with the anxiety, angstry OCD lyrics. I could really relate. I could listen to OK Computer over and over again and hear something new. The music, by far, was probably the most challenging I ever had the opportunity to stick with and ultimately appreciate/cherish. So when I found out the cover artist for many of their records was releasing prints of his own through his website, I nearly jizzed…till I saw the prices. OUCH. Anyway, if anyone feels the need to spend $500 on a PRINT, check them out here:

Incidentally…found this on Boing Boing, which I reiterate, if you haven’t been browsing this site EVERY DAY, then there’s something completely fucking wrong with you.
So I’ve been downloading mashups lately, and I came across the following links party ben and culture deluxe.
I think that, although this stuff is purely disposable, it’s all in good fun. I ODed a little bit due to the sheer mass of content out there, and I would highly recommend sticking with some of the more talented mixers, such as Party Ben and DJ Matt Hite. Several of the other seem really talented too, but I’ll let you guys explore those and see which you enjoy the most.
My favorites are clearly the “Sixx Mixx”‘es that Party Ben does for Live 105 up in San Francisco. Definitely download all those you can.
